Life's Cruelties

Christopher Hitchens, still fighting cancer, has lost his voice.

In some way, it must be for "great men" that they think mortality is more unfair to them than the rest of us. How cruel when it beings by being silent for those whose center of existence being their voice. It happened to Roger Ebert, another who used to talk and talk and talk.

I am so like my father physically, and he's going to be 85 this year.. physically in apparent fine condition, but.. there's always something. I'm absolutely convinced I'm going to age past 100, and be completely alone. That's nearly 60 years from now though. A long time.

When you're young, those things never occur to you. When you're old, you deal with them. When you're middle age, you might be fine but the little whispers in the back of your mind get louder and louder.

Thank god they have meds for that now.
