Bring on the Holy Wars

Greenwald discusses some issues with a few new books, the most interesting part being his observations on Kos' new book, The American Taliban.

The reason these similarities are so rarely discussed is reflected by the angry reaction his book has generated even among his political allies in the progressive world: the one premise that never should be challenged is that Americans -- even when they engage in violent, destructive and inhumane acts -- are intrinsically good, well-intentioned, and even superior, and thus no comparison should be tolerated between them and those foreign Others who embody Pure Evil.

I think that Kos is right, that American conservatives are nearly identical in political philosophy to the most extreme muslim religious lunatics. This is because there isn't much difference in the ideology of various religions. The only difference is that American conservatives are typically constrained by American laws. In Islamic nations, the loons write the laws.

Do some American conservatives want to stone to gay people? I'm quite sure that's true. Doug thinks being gay should be illegal, as he advocated for the brutal laws in Uganda banning homosexuality. So while it's safe to say that most right wingers are not fans of stoning people like me, the difference is merely in degree, not general philosophy.

If some Americans launch a war of aggression that kills hundreds of thousands of innocent people, shouldn't there be some repercussions for it? Why are we forced to pretend that it was all an innocent mistake, and somehow merely forcing Saddam Hussein out of power made it all okay?

Ossama Bin Laden was responsible for over 3000 people being killed in New York. George Bush was responsible for over 100,000 people being killed in Iraq. Yet, one is living in a cave somewhere in Pakistan, reviled by much of the world. The other is living something like 20 miles from me, enjoying his retirement in the most exclusive area of Dallas.

Why do we have a natural instinct to not see it in those terms? Not only do many Americans believe that what Bush did was the correct thing to do, but those who don't, do not think he's a war criminal.

Even I would feel a little uneasy about Bush, Cheney, et. all, being hauled off to The Hague to face war crimes tribunals. I guess I'm conditioned, like everyone else, to think that anything that American leaders do (besides blowing a load on an interns dress) is just fine.

......

In another amusing story, some Christians are going to have an good ol' fashioned book burning. They plan to use the quran. The US military ia asking them not to, but they're going to do it anyway.

KABUL, Afghanistan – The top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan warned Tuesday an American church's threat to burn copies of the Muslim holy book could endanger U.S. troops in the country and Americans worldwide.

Meanwhile, NATO reported the death of an American service member in an insurgent attack in southern Afghanistan on Tuesday.

The comments from Gen. David Petraeus followed a protest Monday by hundreds of Afghans over the plans by Gainesville, Florida-based Dove World Outreach Center — a small, evangelical Christian church that espouses anti-Islam philosophy — to burn copies of the Quran on church grounds to mark the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States that provoked the Afghan war.

"Images of the burning of a Quran would undoubtedly be used by extremists in Afghanistan — and around the world — to inflame public opinion and incite violence," Petraeus said in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Of course, the christian loons don't care if some American soldiers are killed as a result of their little party. That's the whole idea behind it.

Look - these fuckers are so crazy that they think the rapture is a real event that's going to happen pretty damn soon, and they can help get Jesus' attention by inciting a blood bath... thus hastening his return.

They actually believe that.

I'd much prefer Doug Gibbs actually grow a pair of balls and stop being a giant pussy and go kill him some muslims.. along with the rest of the christian freak-brigade in this country. I hope the fucking thing is put on pay-per-view so the rest of us can be entertained by it.. and maybe even place wagers.

It's getting to the point where christians in this country are putting the rest of us at risk because of their insanity.

The most ironic part of the entire book burning is the church name...

Dove World Outreach Center

Might as well remove the words world and outreach because they are clearly irrelevant.
