Some Republican lawmakers — still reveling in Tuesday’s statewide election sweep — are proposing an unprecedented solution to the state’s estimated $25 billion budget shortfall: dropping out of the federal Medicaid program.
Medicaid helps poor people avoid dying for medical reasons. Doing away with the program will not only cause harm and suffering on many people, but it'll also cause insurance rates to go up for the rest of us as poor people crash ER and then not pay the bill.
If poor families are left with no assistance.. no way to afford housing.. no way to afford medical care.. the conservative reasoning goes.. they'll finally get a job. In reality, it could be a nice beginning to the melt-down we need in this nation.
