Booming Economy

Awesome;

Call centre workers are becoming as cheap to hire in the US as they are in India, according to the head of the country’s largest business process outsourcing company.

Now if we can just "re-train" all of those unemployed people to be able to answer the phone, we'll beat back that 10% unemployment any day now.

College grads will have a shiny new cubicle waiting for them as well.

In related news, Obama's disapproval is over 50% for the first time.

Maybe there's some connection there.. hmmmmm

I enjoyed my time as a call center employee. Granted we were inbound help desk/support and not blindly calling people signing them up for AOL or some bs.

It was a shame when I was laid off along with 450 other people in a small town in eastern Washington. These are decent jobs that pay a decent wage that give people some decent skills that they can work off of. If its true that some of these jobs may return to the states I'm all for it.

Filing jobs in the US as opposed to exporting them to India is a nice idea.. but the point is that the jobs are available at what they are paying the Indians to do it.

Meaning.. yes, there may be call center jobs coming back to the US, but at very low wages.. and people will take them because they have no other options.

That's bad.

Bad to a point maybe. But back then I think I was making $10/hr which by today's standards is shit nothing, but its enough if you live in a small town and everything else is cheap too.

I reckon the key to this is that the Indians are being paid more and Americans are willing to be paid a little less due to circumstances.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it good, but it is something. And yeah some people would end up working a shit job like that forever, while others can use it as means to a different end. Its always nice to have shit jobs in the economy that people are willing to work while they try and better themselves.

Would I rather see good jobs pop up, sure. Is everyone in America capable of working a "good" job? No. I'd rather Joe sixpack answer my support calls than collect unemployment for 24 months.

Ya.. that's a good point. Maybe if/when the economy turns around, those low paying call center jobs turn into a liveable wage once unemployment is low, without getting exported again.
