I'm pretty sure that the only reason anyone goes into "police work" is due to low self esteeme and the chance to boost their ego by getting people to do what they want, just because they say so.
I'm sure there are quite a lot of very good people working in law enforcement, and the only stories that make the news are the ones where the cops are arrogant jackasses, or worse. It just seems like those types of people should be weeded out in the interview process.
Of course, the problem is compounded by the police because they do everything they can to protect dangerous cops, who get off on abusing people.
It's also a problem of training when a cop thinks that he can simply tell a citizen in a public venue that they "have to leave", and then arrest them because of something the person says. It's certainly dangerous to ones health to be a dick to a cop, but that's not against the law. Cops just think it is.
