Anchors Away

The USS George H.W. Bush, a steel-gray vessel longer than three football fields and built at a cost of $6.2 billion, was commissioned Saturday with its namesake, the 41st president, and other members of the Bush family on hand for the ceremonies at Naval Station Norfolk.

Adorned for the day with red, white and blue bunting, the USS George H.W. Bush is one of the Nimitz class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, the largest warships in the world.

I suppose that it goes without saying, having an aircraft carrier named after you is a great honor. It also goes without saying that the one term President doesn't deserve it. There was nothing noteworthy about the man or his impact on the nation.

It seems to me that this is the end of the Bush's in America, and I say, good riddance. In terms of family dynasties in American politics, it's incredibly unfortunate that the Kennedy's were assassinated, and the Bush's succeeded in royally fucking up everything they touched.

The USS Bush is the last of it's kind, and will be replaced by a smaller, more agile, more advanced, more lethal, and more.. just about everything better, air craft carrier. The new ship's will be awesome, and with just a little bit of luck, will never have to fire a shot.

I wonder if that metaphor has occurred to anyone else.

Imagine the possibility, in say.. 40 years or so.. the commissioning ceremony for the USS Barack Hussein Obama. If I'm still around (which is very likely), I'll go see it.

...

/update with something more or less unrelated..

“My feeling is that for the first year there probably will be minimal interest in him,” said one agent who works in the public speaking business. “There have been other former presidents who’ve been unpopular leaving office, but nobody’s ever been this unpopular. After a year, though, people forget and then he’ll have a very lucrative career.”
I've never understood how ex-politicians could make vast sums of money giving speeches. You know, people are actually paying them money.. to show up.. and speak about something. I am completely baffled that anybody would pay a single dollar for that, regardless who the politician is.

Still.. the idea of a barely literate imbecile like Bush making millions by reading a speech that somebody else wrote whilst simultaneously butchering the language is simply astounding to me. Somebody is going to give him money to do that? Why?

Could you imagine Sarah Palin getting paid to deliver a speech? LOL
