Roger Ebert reviews Ben Stein's "Intelligent Design" "movie", Expelled..

This film is cheerfully ignorant, manipulative, slanted, cherry-picks quotations, draws unwarranted conclusions, makes outrageous juxtapositions (Soviet marching troops representing opponents of ID), pussy-foots around religion (not a single identified believer among the ID people), segues between quotes that are not about the same thing, tells bald-faced lies, and makes a completely baseless association between freedom of speech and freedom to teach religion in a university class that is not about religion.

And there is worse, much worse. Toward the end of the film, we find that Stein actually did want to title it "From Darwin to Hitler." He finds a Creationist who informs him, "Darwinism inspired and advanced Nazism." He refers to advocates of eugenics as liberal. I would not call Hitler liberal. Arbitrary forced sterilization in our country has been promoted mostly by racists, who curiously found many times more blacks than whites suitable for such treatment.

Ben Stein is only getting warmed up. He takes a field trip to visit one "result" of Darwinism: Nazi concentration camps. "As a Jew," he says, "I wanted to see for myself." We see footage of gaunt, skeletal prisoners. Pathetic children. A mound of naked Jewish corpses. "It's difficult to describe how it felt to walk through such a haunting place," he says. Oh, go ahead, Ben Stein. Describe. It filled you with hatred for Charles Darwin and his followers, who represent the overwhelming majority of educated people in every nation on earth. It is not difficult for me to describe how you made me feel by exploiting the deaths of millions of Jews in support of your argument for a peripheral Christian belief. It fills me with contempt.

Sounds like some familiar themes, eh? Where have we heard all of this before..

Heck, just this weekend, Doug makes yet another bold prediction that the "moral decline" of the United States is going to lead us to some Nazi "final solution".. where I guess we start killing hundreds of thousands of innocent people, or something..

Oh wait..

What I don't really understand is why they are doing this. They continually make bizarre and brazen claims and predictions, using the exact same methods. Yes, they are cheerfully being completely ignorant.

More than that, they revel in it and wear it as a badge of honor, while they hammer themselves to a cross and play the martyr.. the abused..

I've heard these crazy people make similar, outlandish and baseless arguments.

My favorite wrote;

I have never heard anything so bizzare. Liberals "hate" somebody because they didn't have an abortion. Ergo.. tree hugging Liberals are Nazis that want everyone to abort their babies and begin a new master race.. or something.

Still, after reading Myers a lot.. and something like that review from Ebert. the question I keep coming back to is.. why do the Loons keep making these bizarre claims that nobody in their right mind could possibly believe?

Is it because they know their audience is only those anti-intellectual, science denying freaks that will believe anything as long as it affirms their belief that Liberals want to destroy America.. the world.. and Jesus?

Is it all about self validation? It must be that.. right?

Do the Ben Stein's of the world actually believe a thing they are saying, or is it all just about the movement.. about willfully lying in order to achieve the ignorant society they think is superior to a free and intellectual society?

Is that it? Is that why they not only embrace, but glorify extreme ignorance?

It fills me with contempt as well.. a revulsion going beyond pity for their irrational and cowardly methods. As I've always said.. I fully support a seperate system for the majorly whacked out Loons, like Stein and Doug.. Give them Utah.. wall the whole fucking place off.. no interaction between the rest of us and the nuts.

Well.. as we've seen in the last election.. the country is dividing up geographically. I'm just stuck in the wrong part.
