It's sorta like that.
Toshiba has abandoned the HD DVD format, and Sony has the "winning" format with Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray is the more expensive format, both in players and media, but I think it's probably better in the long run because there will be extra features that result from the exapnded storage capacity.

I bought a blue ray dvd recently and couldn't get it to play on my dvd. Is that going to be a problem now??

Don't buy blu-ray DVD's if you don't have a blue-ray player.. :)
