WASHINGTON (CNN) — Harried homeowners seeking mortgage relief from a new Bush administration hotline Thursday had to contend with a bit of temporary misdirection from the president himself. An honest mistake? Please. What are the odds that a mistake in a phone number leads to a religious freak group in Texas? Uh huh..
As he announced his plan to ease the mortgage crisis for consumers, Bush accidentally gave out the wrong phone number for the new “Hope Now Hotline” set up by his administration.
UPDATE: Anyone who dialed 1-800-995-HOPE did not reach the mortgage hotline but instead contacted the Freedom Christian Academy — a Texas-based group that provides Christian education home schooling material.
The program is a farce.. and involves no federal money. It's just an agreement with some of the bigger mortgage holders. One of the stipulations is that the homeowner can't have missed a payment.
Uh.. you know.. that's kinda the idea behind getting foreclosed on. You missed a payment. A lot of them.
I'm rather ambivalent about the whole thing. I feel sorry that people are losing their homes, but they're simply victims of what being an American is all about... in debt up to your ears, spending more than you make, and buying shit you can't afford.
Of course, sometimes circumstances leave people in deep shit. Job loss.. health care costs (which national health care would eliminate by the way), just shitty bad luck.. but this new "program" won't help them either.
