That sinking feeling

It would seem the project shutdown is a done deal. The last day we can bill on it is the 19th - and then I go on paid "looking for another project" time. If nothing turns up, then I'm out of a job. I talked to my boss and she's coordinating with some other people to find us something, but who knows. It may not pan out.

What I do is a really niche skill, so it'll be hard to find another job. I've got that same sick in the pit of my stomach feeling I had when I was laid off from my last job. It wiped out all my savings that time.. and I'd really rather not have that happen again.

This sucks..

/update

It's official, the project has been cancelled. If I end up staying here, I'll no doubt be working on some part of the systems I know nothing about and will basically be starting over from scratch. I don't know if I even like doing this shit anymore.

/update 2

One of our competitors is located in the same city. I just checked their web site. They have job postings for developers supporting the same government agency that I'm supporting now.

One thing I have to remind myself.. is that in the 20 some odd years that I've been working, every time something bad happens, I land on my feet and the new situation turns out better than the old. In fact, the only time I've made real progress in money and such was when I switched jobs.

Apparently having the worlds most coushiest govn job has it's downside as well. Just think, you had a pretty good run there.

I really hope shit works out for ya, but if not, you can always look back and say, shit yeah, that was awesome. And you're a smart enough guy you can find some more work I'm sure. Sure it wont be as godly as your previous job, but I think you'll manage.

RE: Update

That sucks. But wouldn't you rather start from scratch at your current company than start over somewhere else?

Hang in there. When one door shuts, another (or more than one) opens. At least that has been my experience.
