As everyone knows, I'm a Scott Adams disciple. The guy is fucking brilliant.. So, one of his suggestions is using an affirmation to reach a goal. The idea is that you write your affirmation down 15 times every day for 6 months, and it will more than likely be realized. He doesn't think it matters whether you write it by hand or type it, and as writing something by hand is becoming a dying art, I chose to type mine. Mind you it took me a couple days to come up with something worth doing an affirmation for.
So, I opened notepad and numbered down the left side;
1.
2.
3.
...
15.
And I saved it to my desktop, and each day I type the affirmation in.
I forgot to do it yesterday.. ugh.. so I'm not sure if that resets the timer on the 6 months or not, but I'll do it twice today to catch up, if that's possible.
If it works, and since Scott says it does, it must, then what do you choose as your affirmation? It's almost like getting a wish granted, isn't it? I could write "I will get a brand new Corvette ZO6" 15 times a day.. and I'd imagine in about 6 months I'll have enough cash to get one. But that's just a material item. Why would anyone waste a wish on a single item?
I suppose I could write "I will become fabulously rich".. but then it's like the genie in the bottle granting a wish.. they can fuck with you. Some (nearly everyone in Africa) would consider me already fabulously rich in a number of ways.. and so that could backfire on me as well.
I think the affirmation has to be very specific, and very useful, and try not to get greedy. So, I remembered the one thing that I want but have struggled with because I'm fundamentally a lazy person.
So, every day, I now open my notepad and write;
I will work out daily.
Totally amazing post from Adams here, plus there's some follow up.. Just read his blog..
