I saw The illusionist over the weekend. Edward Norton is one of my favorites. It was a pretty good movie, but not as good as was advertised. I figured out the "twist" early on, and promptly spoiled it for John, though I suspect he already knew. I'm a shit head like that. I'll stop a DvD and explain what's going to happen next, and I'm correct nearly every time. I suppose that's not really a gift given how bad movies are lately.
Once you've seen a thousand movies, you get a feel for how they are structured, and what little pieces to look for that give away the plot. Once you've seen that many films, you notice that it's all the same shit over and over, simply dressed in a different package.
Often I find myself wishing that the producers had given me the script first so I could re-write the really stupid shit, and implausible situations. I think I'd be really good at that. You can tell when a writer gets stuck, and they pull out the typical that could never happen bullshit, right out their ass.
Truly, Hollywood is in suck mode.. and has been, well, since the release of The Return of the King. It's one big giant unimaginative suck-fest. The good news - the internet and tools like youtube. I don't imagine it's going to be that many more years before anonymous joe blow's can make their own Hollywood quality films, for very little money... then just download it to your DVR and play it on your bigscreen.
The gate keepers of entertainment are going to die.. and the truly talented will no longer have to blow somebody to be noticed. To see that coming isn't innovative. To figure out how to make money off it is..

I think you're largely right, but there are still some interesting things happening around the fringes ... Where Hollywood is really killing itself, in my mind, is in the marketing of the movies that are actually GOOD .. Idiocracy, which has gotten positive reviews from the few people who have managed to see it, will play virtually nowhere before it hits DVD
