Lieberman has to loose this election. It is absolutely vital to the future of the country - not just because of the votes that he would cast in the Senate, but because of the symbolic nature of what it represents. Lieberman is the essence of what is wrong with American politics. Everyone knows George Bush is lying scum, and he's made his agenda quite clear. He's not trying to hide what he is. Lieberman is dangerous because he is the same as Bush, but pretends he isn't. The fallout of the Lieberman defeat will turn the media narrative about liberals and progressives ever so slightly, and that's really all we need.
Speaking of media narrative. ABC has produced a "docudrama" on the events leading up to 9/11. It's basically an error riddled hit piece on Clinton. Even Bush administration officials have claimed that it's made-up bullshit.
The amusing part is that ABC has sent a press copy of the "film" to a bunch of right wing freaks (Limbaugh, etc), but has refused to send a copy to President Clinton's office. ABC is even sending out 100,000 copies to school teachers to use as instructional material in schools.
Fox News is kind of the media equivalent of George Bush. It's all made up bullshit and spin, and they really don't try and hide that. ABC is the media equivalent of Joe Liberman, which is what makes them dangerous.
Right now, the high hit count left wingers (Atrios, Kos, Americablog, etc.) are teeing off on ABC, armed with factual information that proves the film is nothing more than a piece of propaganda. It's demonstrable, and even right wing terrorism experts are calling it bullshit. It's going to be interesting to see how ABC handles this one.
** update **
Holy crap.. Madeleine Albright wrote ABC a little lover letter..
While I have requested a copy of the broadcast, I have yet to receive one. I have been informed by some who had been given the right to view the broadcast that the drama depicts scenes that never happened, events that never took place, decisions that were never made and conversations that never occurred; it asserts as fact things that are not fact. What I find odd is how low Bush and the Republican congress are in public opinion polling despite the fact that we have a media establishment the Nazi's would have envied.
For example, one scene apparently portrays me as refusing to support a missile strike against bin Laden without first alerting the Pakistanis; it further asserts that I notified the Pakistanis of the strike over the objections of our military. Neither of these assertions is true. In fact, the 9/11 commission reports states (page 117), “Since the missiles headed for Afghanistan had had to cross Pakistan, the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs was sent to meet with Pakistan’s army chief of staff to assure him the missiles were not coming from India. Officials in Washington speculated that one or another Pakistani official might have sent a warning to the Taliban or Bin Ladin.”
I hate trotting out the Nazi analogy.. but if the shoe fits..
