Do NOT use "u r" as a replacement for "you are", or any combination of single written letters as stand-ins for entire words. Doing that only screams "I am stupid as fuck, but like to think I'm hip and 'leet".
If you use "ima" as a replacement for "I am", or "I will", or "I'm going to", ima gut you like a trout and laugh gleefully as your entrails spill onto the floor.
If I get a business email that uses any of the internet shorthand phrases, I will reply to the person and mock them until they slit their own wrists, and slowly bleed out in their cube.
That said - in certain situations it's okay to use something like "LOL" - or even "btw". Real time internet dialog that uses acronyms for longer, properly constructed, phrases is fine. For example, if something goes wrong; "wtf?" is a reasonable way to express dismay.
The distinction is subtle where properly constructed shorthand use is permissible, and when language demands fully enunciated words. If a person can not understand the distinction, they will fail in life.. and quite miserably I might add. Those people just need to STFU.

I could not agree more. I am usually very good in this regard. My only exception is "dunno". For some reason I will type that instead of "don't know" or "I don't know" frequently. Of course, I would never do that in a business correspondence.
Things I read that generally piss me off:
amirite?
L2P (alternately, L2Play or Learn2Play...actually, L2Anything annoys me)
FTW! This used to be ok, but it has been so over-used that I can't stand it anymore.
Hai, or Hai2u. Not only is it retarded, it actually takes more letters to type. Fucking idiots.
It's not that hard to type correctly, and not look like a giant douche. I agree that shorthand can be fine: lol, wtf, ty, etc...
Damnit Tom, you got me all riled up now. =P
z said.... have you got a blog too>??/
Nope. I just happen to know Tom from another internet pursuit.
I don't know if I have the time, ability or motivation to put out a decent blog. I'd rather hang around here and post little comments now and then. =)
