A while back, I wrote my viewpoint on The Da Vinci Code, here. One of the more moronic plots in the movie is this notion that Jesus and Mary Magdalene had children, and one of the main characters is the sole living member of that "bloodline". It seemed to me to be mathematical poop.

To quote myself;

What a huge load of bullshit.

Not the "Jesus wasn't divine part". That's true. I'm talking about there only being one blood heir. As I indicated in my post on HIV, human beings breed like rabbits. If Jesus did have any children, the blood would have spread so far so fast that we'd all have some of the DNA in us.. every last person on this planet I suspect.

So, a few days ago the AP published a story detailing a study that concludes I'm right - as if it takes a mathematician to figure out the obvious.

Whoever it was probably lived a few thousand years ago, somewhere in East Asia, Taiwan, Malaysia and Siberia all are likely locations. He or she did nothing more remarkable than be born, live, have children and die.

Yet this was the ancestor of every person now living on Earth - the last person in history whose family tree branches out to touch all 6.5 billion people on the planet today.

That means everybody on Earth descends from somebody who was around as recently as the reign of Tutankhamen, maybe even during the Golden Age of ancient Greece. There's even a chance that our last shared ancestor lived at the time of Christ.

"It's a mathematical certainty that that person existed," said Steve Olson, whose 2002 book "Mapping Human History" traces the history of the species since its origins in Africa more than 100,000 years ago.

Of course, this wouldn't be Tom's rant-fest if I were remiss to point out that the religious folks would insist the world is only 6,000 years old, and we sprung out of god exactly as we are today in Adam and Eve.

In any event, it was kinda cool to come across a story supporting an argument I simply pulled out of my ass a month earlier. It's really quite cool to know that we share the same blood and DNA with Asians, and Africans, and Arabs.. heck.. I'm even related to Brad Pitt, even though he got the better set of genes.

The other thing to note here.. is that the person(s) you have sex with? You're related to them... oh.. and if you're a breeder.. in about 3000 years or so, your offspring will be the entire human race. Imagine that..
