Chimpy & the BSC's

Thinking more about the Miers pick has me reconsidering how bat-shit crazy the Bush administration is in real-world effect. The net results? Not a whole lot, and it's quite possible that's intentional.

But Tom, you may say, George Bush is a born-again (whatever the hell that is) Christian freak-a-zoid that wants a Christian Taliban federal government! I had thought that was the case, but I'm not so sure now.

It goes without question that Bush relied on stoking the fires of hatred within the Christian conservative movement. He clearly did pander to the crazies. But, consider abortion. Has it changed? No. Will it change during his term? Highly unlikely. Consider the Federal Marriage Amendment - that would forever bar gays from equal rights. They knew that was never going to get passed, but just used it to fire up the freaks.

Now, we see that the BSC's are going ape shit about the Miers appointment to the Supreme Court. The WaPo has the story.

The BSC's were okay with Roberts because he's a clean cut, good looking, powerfully intellectual, ideologically right leaning man. But does he help the wingers? I think not. I listened to him very carefully, and I am convinced he is not a Scalia or Thomas, and I don't think the BSC's think he is either. I think he will be very strict in interpretation of the Constitution, and given the precedent of Loving vs. Virginia, and the clear intent of the equal protection clause, I'd wager he'll be more liberal in rulings on social issues.

Now, we have Miers - who clearly is not intellectually gifted. The right wing said "okay" to Roberts, because they thought they were going to get a "Roy Moore" style old testament sledge hammer this time around. They did not get that. Instead, they got a woman who courted the gay vote when she ran for Dallas city counsel back in the 80's. They got a 60 year old unmarried-probably lesbian.

Why? It could be that Bush merely used the Christian right wing as a tool to get elected, then dumped them on the side of the road as so much trash, which is indeed what they are. Perhaps he is not so evil that he wants to destroy this nation.

The right wingers flipped when Reagan appointed O'Connor. It's deja vous all over again.

Just a thought.

Weyrich, who hosted one of the meetings, said afterward that he had rarely seen the level of passion at one of his weekly sessions. "This kind of emotional thing will not happen" often, Weyrich said. But he feared the White House advisers did not really grasp the seriousness of the conservative grievance. "I don't know if they got the message. I didn't sense that they really understand where people were coming from."
Well, Paul.. you just got kicked to the curb.

** update **

Sully asks a good question. Why didn't bush nominate Ric "man-on-dog" Santorum? Apparently Santorum is 18 points behind in his re-election bid, and is going to be needing a job next year. The right wing would have loved it. There would have been a huge fight, filibuster, nuclear option.. blood running in the streets..

But no.. Bush picked somebody that Ann Coulter said:

Bush may as well appoint his chauffeur head of NASA as put Miers on the Supreme Court....

However nice, helpful, prompt and tidy she is, Harriet Miers isn't qualified to play a Supreme Court justice on "The West Wing," let alone to be a real one.
And how does that surprise that anorexic slut Coulter? After all, Chimpy picked a horse show manager to head up FEMA for Gorak's sake. Why not pick somebody that reminds him of his mother to the Supreme Court?

Oh.. and apparently it's looking like it's going to be 22 indictments in Plame-gate, with unka Karl leading the pack. I wouldn't mind sharing a cell with Karl for a couple of days..
