Uh oh

Before leaving for work this morning, I wanted to copy a DVD. I fired up the computer and put the DVD in the reader while it's booting. Chug chug chug.. it's making an odd noise out of the reader.. as if the disc might be scratched or something.. which is preventing the computer from finishing booting. I took the DVD out and it finishes booting, but hangs shortly after. It's a hard crash. I powered it off and rebooted, and after booting my profile is hosed. It says something about the profile being corrupt.. which is really bad... so I of course don't have a backup or anything.. and think, well, loading an old system restore point probably won't fix anything but it's worth a try. So I load a restore point from last Sunday and re-boot.. bad bad.. stop errors.. can't boot in safe mode..

It seems that when the computer hung and I power cycled it, that created some errors in files in the profile.. and now it won't boot.. so I gave up and headed for work..

It's possible the stop error is related to a hardware device as it refers to an IRQ, which is hardware related so when I get home, the first thing to try will be removing everything except the video card and see what happens.

Normally I'm able to fix just about anything bad that happens. In fact, I can't remember ever having to reinstall an operating system or losing a profile. This time I think it might really be toast.

In actuality, it wouldn't be a bad thing to reinstall the operating system from scratch. Over time, operating systems get bloated with more and more crap, so having a fresh install can be a good thing. I dual boot with Windows 98, so I can use that to move some things around to get my email and so on back from the profile.

The problem is, it will take a huge amount of time to rebuild everything. I have a ton of stuff that would need to be reinstalled. Plus, patching everything back up and so on. It sucks..
