Quote of the Day

"The important point is that religious zealotry cannot be incorporated into conservatism. It is the nemesis of conservatism. And it has to be purged in order for conservatism to be revived." - Andrew Sullivan
Sullivan is right.. but I'm not much of a "conservative" except possibly in fiscal matters. In that sense, I'm more of a Bill Clinton "pay as you go", "balanced budget" type of conservative. I'm not a social conservative by any means.

So, while Sullivan does have a point, truly Barry Goldwater style conservatism is dead. This is going to sound odd, but the Schaivo case has me reconsidering. I want more evangelical Christian's in the Republican party. I want more Tom Delay - more Bill Frist - more Rick Santorum. Nothing could be more damaging to the Republican party than it getting more Christian crazy than it is now. It will destroy the Republicans - thus.. us liberals/progressives/democrats quietly slip in and get this country back on track.

The nemesis is the Arnold Schwarzenegger type Republican. Arnold is pretty liberal socially. He doesn't seem to have a problem with gay marriage, and he supports civil unions. You know - he's not terribly sexually repressed, so I'm not surprised he's liberal in that regard. He's also not an ethical scumbag. For instance, in Texas the Republican's won the state legislature and proceeded to redistrict the state to ensure they would retain power. Schwarzeneeger has said that in California, he wants the citizens to vote on redistricting rather than letting the party in power in the legistlature decide. Not a bad idea..

I really wouldn't mind seeing a John McCain or Schwarzenegger style Republican in office, but since we really want to win political offices for the Democrats, I'm enjoying seeing the Christian freak parade take over the Republican party. That helps us.
