Apple News

Apple

One of my readers (who shall remain nameless) is a faithful Mac-ite. He is everything Apple. Like any minority (apple has a 3% share in the US computer market), he tends to feel smug and superior about it. Mac-ite's tend to be very vocal. It's nearly a religion.

The news today is some new products that Apple is rolling out. It's nice to see they are introducing some lower end iPods:

The smallest will have 512 megabytes of storage and cost $99. A one-gigabyte version, which holds 240 songs, will sell for $149. The lowest cost iPod is the mini, which costs $249 for four gigabytes — enough to store about 1,000 songs
iPods are neat if you're the sort that needs to have music in your ears 24/7. I go from my house (music on computer), to my car (sat radio-CD's), to my office (music on computer), back to my car (sat radio-CD's), and home (music on computer). Do I need an iPod for the walk between my office and my car?

There are times when I venture outside my home/car/office. Do I need music then? Well, those times are when you're supposed to be having a "life", and I really wouldn't want to have earplugs in. That might seem anti-social.

My point is, I've thought that I needed an iPod to keep up my trendy persona, but I just can't find a use for it. Even if I'm traveling and on an airplane, I have a laptop with me.

Sometimes new and trendy electronics serve a purpose. Is Apple selling anything other than an image?

I'm gonna get flamed for that post.. That's okay, I have flame retardant underwear. :)

Post from Terry

You forgot to mention APPLES 52% market share in Japan, and how Apple is projected to have a 20% market share by the end of 2005. We are the wave of the future, we have been UNIX running fools for over 2 years. Hey where is Longhorn? Oh that's right... it's eating our dust! Upon saying that I forgive you for mocking me! You will owe me!

Got your email and am trying what you said. Hope it works. Am going to try first as your dad wants to write and then I can show him how. We think this is great! We are both so proud of your fantastic knowledge of this computer world. No comments regarding your issues at this point but your dad may have something to say!!!! We agree with much of what you say. I am struggling - surgery is just a week old - went from wrist to elbow in right arm (I am right handed) with a plastic tube inserted on top of my arm - very painful and no guarantee that it will work - won't know for awhile but this is my last shot at trying to get on dialysis - will play my cards some other way if this doesn't work. We look forward every day to reading your musings; however, I haven't gotten the music to play but then you know me! Mg

Although I tend to agree with you on many levels with your i-pod issue, oh dear brother of mine, I have to say that when traveling great distances as we often do, the i-pod has become my savior. Try having 4 people in one vehicle, all with different tastes in music. Not a pretty picture. It's a fight to drive that vehicle, because in our case the one who drives, decides!! Also the fact that this i-pod holds so many songs that we can all find something we like without having to be a slave to the radio that most likely will be out of range more times than not.
