Israel spends more per capita than the US, but I'm not sure if that includes the amount of assistance they get from the US.
Of course, we in the US need a military and we need defense. However, it goes without saying that there is no net real-world benefit from defense spending. We don't get mass transit, or cleaner drinking water, etc. from spending money on tanks and jets.
If we in the US were really interested in world domination, we'd do it economically and drastically reduce military spending. And that, of course, is why China will one day rule the world.

I'm actually a little surprised that the USA is only roughly double Australia, per capita. Thought it would be even higher.
