Listen to the Flower People

Somebody sent John some flowers when he got home from the hospital after his knee surgery. They are tulips actually, and quite pretty. I've never understood the point behind the gifting of flowers. There is only one sure thing you get with them. Dead flowers.

It would seem counter-productive to send an ill person a plant that is fated to a slow and painful death. It's especially true when someone dies, and you get flowers. All you need is another reminder of death.. by watching the slow fading and eventual crumbling death of a plant.

It's one of those customs that I would guess hardly anyone knows the origin. Sending delicious treats, on the other hand, is a very good idea.

I'm going to feel bad just throwing the tulips into the trash. A couple of weeks ago, they were beautiful and thriving plants... growing in the sunlight and fertile earth. Now they're going to be stuffed into a plastic bag and buried in a landfill for the rest of eternity.
