Asshat Quote of the Day

General Welfare is an adjective, not an authority. - Douglass "English as a Second Language" Gibbs

Oh dear... Doug doesn't understand what an "adjective" is. Still - it's yet another one of his rants about the "General Welfare" clause in the US Constitution.

And my inevitably deleted comment to his post, explaining how the Federal Government of the United States functions. I'm pretty sure there was a program when we were kids that explained this...

....

The thing about the "General Welfare" clause is that the President has to sign the bills passed by Congress in order for them to become a law.

In fact - even prior to that, both houses have to approve the legislation.

Then, once it is a law, Marbury vs. Madison clarified that the judiciary can review the legislation for "constitutionality" of said legislation and invalidate it if it does not pass muster.

You could even file a lawsuit, say contesting Social Security, and litigate it all the way up to the Supreme Court. That is YOUR right as a citizen of the United States - one I suggest you avail yourself of.

Another avenue to reverse legislation that you think is "unconstitutional" is to simply get Representatives and Sentators that agree with you to pass legislation to un-do the program, and get the President to sign it. That means, all you have to do is get people elected who agree with you - which is what elections are all about.

So, as you can see, there are quite a few "checks" that legislation promoting the "general welfare" must pass through before it becomes the law of the land - and in the case of things like Social Security, and Medicare - become wildly popular programs that Americans like, and which are basically political suicide to try and propose the elimination of.

That you don't think that all of those processes I described function the way you think they should is irrelevant. You can flail away at it for as long as you draw breath. It's not going to change.

Oh.. and one last thing. You don't know what an "adjective" is. I suggest you look at any online resource that describes what it means.

Honestly, for someone who bleats on about god given rights, he somehow thinks it's open to states to ignore said rights- and if they do, citizens hold the states to account by voting with their feet.

You couldn't make that stupid up.

I find that phrase strange; "god given rights".

Some old men write some stuff in a book a couple of thousand of years ago, and they somehow become "rights" provided by the Magical Sky Wizard, which trumps any government action (law or otherwise) by default.

Never mind that no one has ever seen the Magical Sky Wizard. You simply don't question it.
