As Krugman points out, it's one thing for the President to make a deal to keep the government fromm closing. It's quite another to celebrate it as some epic victory.
Obama is planning some speech or other next week, where presumably he's going to talk about how we all need to "tighten our belts" and "sacrifice" and all that. This is, after all, and by far, the most wealthy nation on the planet. We can't afford a reasonable living standard for seniors or poor people... especially those seniors that paid into the system their entire working lives.
The thing that makes Obama the worst president that we could ever have the horrible luck to have, is that he constantly caves to the Republican memes, thus moving the "center" even further to the right.
He does this, of course, because he thinks it'll help his re-election chances. Realistically, that's probably true. I keep hoping he'll lose, but he won't. But what he's doing is completely wrecking the entire concept of liberalism.
I've never joked about Obama being, by far, the worst President this country has ever had... of course framing it in my experience. I'm not overly familiar with 19th century American presidents of course. Regardless, I think Obama has been a bitter disappointment.
I don't expect that to change any time soon - but hey, bad news for seniors, the poor, and unemployed, is good news for us.
