In the NBA, the Indiana Pacers have secured a play-off spot with a record of 37-44. Yes, that's a losing record. It would be like an NFL team going 6-10 and making the play-offs.
The Eastern Conference teams that did not make the play-offs have a combined record of 183-384... a 32% win percentage.
In the NHL, the Dallas Stars finished the season out of the play-offs with 95 points, and a record of 42-29 with 11 over-time wins... a 59% win percentage.

The Seahawks were 7-9 when they made the playoffs... just throwin that out there. :)
Steve.
It's dumb the way conferences work in pro sports. I understand it's a way of fostering rivalries, and I like that. It's just stupid when shit teams make the playoffs and quality teams miss them because of the over sub-dividing of conferences.
It would be easy to keep the scheduling while at the same time getting the teams with the best win percentage in the play-offs. Record tie-breakers would be easy as well.
