I think the focus of the article is wrong, but it's written in the typical style of a "news report". What this story does is, once again, illuminate the fundamental stupidity of the Loon Brigade. I don't think this jackass deserves any pats on the back, or positive recognition, just because he's figured out that gay people are human beings. Fuck him.
In December, Marinelli came out in support of repealing the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy. “I just realized you can’t oppose everything these people want to do,” he said. The decision upset his colleagues at NOM, he added. But he also grew sick of the hateful comments about gay people he kept seeing on his various websites and his Facebook page. “I had thought the hate was fringe, I denied it, but it was everywhere,” he said. “By January or February I realized I just supported marriage equality.”
"These people". I like that. He still doesn't get it. He still thinks of gays as a distinct "other". The only thing that's changed is that he doesn't thing "they" should be discriminated against.
That conversation had a lasting impact, said Marinelli. “I realized he was someone I could talk to, not someone I wanted to go after anymore,” he said. “Anthony helped change me because I finally saw someone personally affected by what I was doing.”
This is basically the definition of a sociopath. Prior to having actually conversed with a gay person, he had zero empathy for an entire class of human beings. In fact, he wanted to inflict as much misery on this class as he could, and it took actually meeting somebody before he could think about a gay person with what should be a natural condition.
His mother, Karen Clark, said she’s surprised at his change, but not the reasons behind it: “I knew he wasn’t against gay people, he just really supports traditional marriage.” He’s the kind of man, she says “who wants only a Tiffany ring for his fiancĂ©e once he gets engaged.”
Again - it's textbook. He wants a certain thing, and thinks it should be exactly the same for everyone else. In fact, he's so emotional about it that he has to engage in activities that he knows are designed to inflict damage on a class of people just because they are different. He's a complete sociopath.
These things define the whole "christian conservative" population. Fear.. ignorance.. hate. It starts with base stupidity. It requires not just ignorance, but an inability to reason.. to think.. to conceptualize an issue and understand cause and effect. It all begins with that basic lack of intellect.. because it's not possible to fear something if you can reason the implications of the thing.
There's a common expression.. "Don't want gay marriage? Don't have one". To the christian right, they can't conceptualize that. They don't have the intellect to even understand what that means. That's what leads one to hardcore religion and the conservative movement in the first place.
It's been this way for thousands of years. It's what enables all of the horrors that religion has inflicted on the world. It's not going to change. There will always be sociopaths trying their best to inflict as much damage as possible to the most recent target group. The difference is that the culture around them does change. When it's not culturally advantageous to hold a certain view, it appears there is less of that attitude. That's only because those that hold the view aren't as vocal out of fear of the consequences.
I don't think there are fewer racists in the US then there were in say, 1950. I just think they're not nearly as vocal about it because it's not a culturally advantageous view to express. It'll be the same thing with gay rights. The culture can shift in a positive direction, but that doesn't mean that the evil bastards aren't still evil.
It simply frosts me that an entire article appears in a national publication just because some asshole has recently realized what most people have understood for a while.
