Kicking Bully Asses

""Serbia will guarantee human rights for all its citizens, regardless of the differences among them, and no attempts to revoke these freedoms with violence will be allowed," - Serbian President Boris Tadic

Pretty remarkable story from Serbia.

Apparently the government of Serbia wants to join the EU, and part of that process is bringing national laws in accordance with EU requirements. Not persecuting gay people is a requirement. That's a good thing, but very controversial in a bastion of religious loonery. After all, they fought a horrible war over religion in the not-too-distant past.

The ass kicking can be metaphorical, and it can be literal. In this case, it's a bit of both. The government beat the shit out of some of the protesters, and it's threatening others with 8 years in prison. They've already rounded up quite a few and put them in jail. I like that.

There is a huge difference between being personally opposed to something out of some misguided principle, but when you take action to to intentionally hurt the oppressed, you deserve "severe punishment". Nice to see the government in Belgrade gets that. I'm pretty floored by it.
