Grandstanding

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg said Wednesday he'll introduce legislation requiring colleges to adopt a code of conduct that prohibits bullying and harassment following the suicide of a student whose gay sexual encounter in his dorm room was broadcast online.

Lautenberg, D-N.J., made the announcement at a town meeting on the Rutgers University campus in memory of 18-year-old freshman Tyler Clementi.

As politicians so often do, this jackass is hijacking a horrific event in order to draw attention to himself.

What university allows bullying and harassment? I can't imagine that any do. Still.. this asshole has to "introduce" meaningless legislation.

The act of secretly recording someone having sex and putting it out on the internet is already illegal.. both criminally and civilly. The offender can go to jail and be sued for monetary damages.

You can't make being a jerk illegal. You can't pass legislation to force people to not be bigots. It pisses me off when politicians are so transparently douche.

Dan Savage, on the other hand, reacted to the tragedy by starting a campaign called "It gets better". The idea behind it is for adults to record videos for Youtube, describing their experiences with bigotry in their youth and describing how life changes for the better when you get older. That's a much better way of addressing the issue than "introducing legislation".
