Here's some key pieces I've lifted out..
Obama has been siding with the brass over the desires of some of his political constituency on the left.
fight release of potentially incendiary pictures of prisoners
Obama decided to slow his promised withdrawal of combat troops from Iraq.
go-slow approach to repealing the ban on gays serving openly in the armed forces.
Obama has surrounded himself with current and former military men,
Not rushing the gays-in-the-military debate adds to the reserve of good will Obama is building with officers who worried privately that Obama, with little direct exposure to the military and its culture, would cut them out of decisions
Although Obama promised as a candidate that he would end the ban, he has made no specific move to do so.
Nuts-and-bolts Pentagon planning for such a change is on hold
Obama changed his mind
Gen. Raymond Odierno, had Obama's ear
Elections work a certain way. A candidate explains what his policy positions are. We choose who to vote for.
The candidate, Obama, then decides that what people elected him to do doesn't matter, without realizing, what the generals in the military want does not matter. They are a tool. They are ordered to do a job, and if they don't like that job, they are free to quit the job.
Who wields power in a democracy? Is it the voters who made their voices plain? Is it the establishment that does not want things to change, and prefers the status quo that they are used to?
This is all pretty simple. If we have to, we'll Liberman Obama. Obviously it'll be a lot harder to primary him in 2012, i.e. impossible, but we can drive his numbers down so low that he can do nothing. Having the joke of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid in Congress won't help.
Democrats.. and particularly the Liberals, are not interested so much in the cult of personality that Obama represents. We're interested in policy, and we don't care who it is. You tell us you're going to do something and we support your candidacy based on that, you do it.. or else, we dump you and go find somebody else.
This is the new way of doing politics in America. It's how we'll kill the special interests and the forces that are directly working against the policies that will benefit Americans. The candidate doesn't matter. They're just government employees. The policy is king.. so either get with the program, or don't bother even running for office.
Obama is attempting to be all things to all people, when this is the prime opportunity to be a bold leader. Well, not be a bold leader. Now is the time for the President to do what he said he would do. Nothing more. I find it very strange that some people think that somehow, some way, that doesn't matter.
FDR truly was the last great Democratic President.. a man that did things.. created fantastic institutions that are the cornerstone of our society today. Obama, instead, is embracing the lawless secrecy and war posturing of the the most despised President in generations (possibly of all time), and throwing the cornerstone of his promises in the trash bin.
Bush will be remembered as a buffoon that got us into bullshit wars, trashed the Constitution, and ultimately caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of human beings.
Obama will be remembered as the guy who could talk a mean game.. but really changed nothing.
