A Progressive Nation

I was born too early.. honestly.. not because I'm feeling old now.. but because I spent my youth in a very different world than exists now.

I remember a time before personal computers.. lol Honestly.. and one could argue that hanging out with friends getting smashed out of our minds is better than sitting in front of a computer and raiding in Warcraft and getting smashed out of our minds.. at least now, people have a choice.

There were no PVRs.. I drove a '78 mustang II without air conditioning in Phoenix.. had no cell phone.. and on and on. Yes, despite the bad economic conditions.. despite the wars and terraists, things are way better now than they used to be some 20 years ago.

I'm often annoyed by the religious nutbaggery that goes on now. It's always been around, but we're just way more aware now. The thing is, the so-called "culture war" is over. It has been for a long time. All you have to do is look at opinions versus age. Young people are vastly more likely to be Liberal in their outlook, and Democrats in their politics. Religious identification scales by age as well.

And, of course, this is all about Teh Gay. The Vermont state legislature over-rode the veto of the governor and now same-sex marriage is the law in the state.

It's a lot different being gay and growing up in a state where you are considered normal by state law then it is to be constantly told there is something wrong with you. A gay kid in Vermont now has everything anyone could ever want right in front of him... well.. assuming he can get the money for college and get a job.. but hey, at least that's a level playing field with peers.

The Loon Brigade has lost.. but I'm glad there are still some around to make fun of. Politics wouldn't be nearly as fun if there were no opponents.

And ya.. I know that gay kid in Vermont might write something very similar to this when he's my age.. bemoaning the fact that he was forced to grow up without teleporters..
