My experience with academia is in line with a lot of people's - very liberal (and in my case, Communist too), and if you allow the liberal staff to know you are not liberal like them it can get you failed. I have a number of people that can testify to that, and some that experienced that first hand. My wife bypassed that bullshit in two of her four colleges by attending Christian Universities (Azusa Pacific and California Baptist).
I admire academic achievement too, but not when their arrogance enables them to lose touch with reality. Did I ever tell you why I didn't finish my education? I don't normally talk about it. Communist teacher after a strong discussion said a few lies to the dean after he and I got into a heated political argument, got me kicked out, and no school would touch me afterward. Nobody came to my defense, they were too afraid of the powers that be - even though there were many witnesses that knew the truth was to the contrary of what that Communist Bastard was saying. Oh, Occidental, by the way. My wife, just to inform you, has 5 degrees, and I helped her with her homework the entire way. Academics is important to me, which I think is part of the reason my children rejected that route. Rebellion, I suppose. My son is already regretting it, but now is too deep into life to do much about it. Daughter may return to school - after all, she did very well academically.
Paranoia underlines everything that hard-core religious Conservatives think about. Everything is a conspiracy, and they are always victimized. That's why a religious figure like Jesus is so compelling to them. Jesus was victimized also, but was ultimately righteous. He "rose" against those oppressors.. and so it's not difficult to see why Doug found university such a hostile place.
Millions of people of all types attend university without getting booted out. It's just in Doug's paranoid world that he is the victim. He was singled out for "political" reasons by the "Communists" that infest higher education.
It can't be because he was acting inappropriately, could it? It couldn't have had anything to do with him that he got booted. He simply was trying to engage in a "discussion".
Ya right.. I would have loved to have seen that discussion that got him booted. Can you imagine Doug's hostility and built-in disdain for the professors? He expected that he should be able to insult them without consequence. He expected he should be able to engage in any sort of lunacy that millions of other students don't feel compelled to engage in, and without consequence.
But not only that.. the entire world of academia is in cahoots with each other, and so Doug's name is on some super secret list of those that are banned from ever attending any college ever again.
I studied engineering in college, and so there wasn't any discussion of politics in class. Students are expected to respect the staff and the course materials. A student has a choice to either learn the material and follow the coursework, or they can simply leave the school. Nobody gets to re-write the program to suit them.
Imagine how crazy a student would have to be to actually get booted from college? Every single professor I've known, and in every university setting I've been involved in, free expression and thought was welcomed, but not as a disruption. Arguments are always expected to be academically framed, and if you can present a persuasive case that changes minds, that's very well encouraged.
However.. in Doug's world.. it's better to present contradictory "evidence" like Ray Comfort does with evolution. Just completely make up a bunch of non-sequitors, and ignore the scientific method.. ignore writing peer reviewed papers.. but not only ignore the way that science is done, but disdain it as well.
They are simply crazy as fuck.. marginalized into a special little niche of paranoia and victimization. They deserve to be excluded from academia.. Doug just as much as Ray Comfort, not because they are presenting anything controversial.. not because they are challenging the accepted norms of thinking.. but because they are fundamentally grounded in crazy.. totally absent any evidence.. any credibility.. any rational thought process. Normally that just gets you an F on your transcript, but when you are the Head Loon, of the Loon Brigade and you really push it, that gets you booted out, which is basically unheard of. Before Doug, I've never heard of anyone getting booted out except for bad grades. Ever.
Remember when Doug's wife posted on his blog when he was out of town? It was an awful mish mash of horrid grammar and incoherent thought. Now we know why. She didn't attend university. She attended Whack-a-Loon U.
Ultimately, Doug was fortunate to have been booted out of uni. It's a badge of honor for the fringe lunatics. It validates his victimization. He's absolutely convinced his paranoia isn't a mental condition.. it's real. It's not he that has a skewed outlook on the world. It's the professors who's "arrogance enables them to lose touch with reality".
And in Doug's word, people who spend a lifetime in a niche of academic pursuit are "arrogant" by definition, because they don't simply acknowledge that science is just like religion.. a "belief". Doug has no idea what the scientific method is, and disdains anyone who actually "proves" things and uses real "evidence".
Again, that's because to follow that line of reasoning.. to expect evidence and standards in academics.. would lead to the obvious conclusion about his god. The professor "lied" about him... uh huh. That's what it's all about.. ultimately.. it's all about his fears.. and paranoia.. and God.
.. and the rest of us point and laugh.

Okay.. one other bit..
This has to do with "Joe the Plumber", whom I've criticized as not even being licensed. Doug wrote me to let me know that I was "stupid".
Once again, your stupidy amazes. He is a plumber, but not a licensed plumber in the sense that he has his own business. He is just an employee for a plumbing outfit, which makes him a plumber, but he falls under the license of the employer. As for his questions to Obama, I wouldn't say that they were necessarily critical, he was just willing to ask hardball questions - which Obama never got from the media, they were too busy throwing him softballs. Also, Joe the Plumber's appeal was, like Palin, he represented the common man - you know, the folks the left claims to represent and support, but scoffs at the moment they get a little limelight.
I always giggle a little bit when Doug calls me "stupid".. because I actually check these things.. and it turns out that Joe was required to have a license. Doug was completely wrong.. which is not unusual..
Because he's stupid as fuck.. not just a little vapid.. not just your garden variety level of dumb.. but spectacularly and monumentally stupid, and wrong in virtually every word that drops from his mouth. He said my "stupidity" amazes him, and misspelled stupidity. Classic.
As part of the background on McCain's use of "Joe the Plumber", several media outlets researched his professional plumbing credentials. One Toledo Blade article stated, "Mr. Wurzelbacher said he works under Al Newell’s license, but according to Ohio building regulations, he must maintain his own license to do plumbing work. He is also not registered to operate as a plumber in Ohio, which means he’s not a plumber." "Mr. Joseph (business manager of the local union) said Mr. Wurzelbacher could only legally work in the townships, but not in any municipality in Lucas County or elsewhere in the country." [76]
A detailed article in Newsweek pointed out that, "Reporters working on profiles soon discovered that Wurzelbacher didn’t actually have a state or local license to work as a plumber in the Toledo area, and despite Wurzelbacher’s insistence that he didn’t need one, local officials and building inspectors in Toledo insisted he did. On Friday, those officials said a letter was being mailed to Wurzelbacher’s employer warning him to get into compliance with city codes or face the loss of the company’s license."[77] Wurzelbacher's employer at the time, A. W. Newell, is licensed by the State of Ohio and the City of Toledo.[18][11]
An MSNBC article further elaborated on the requirement for Joe to legally work, "...anyone working under Newell should have a journeyman’s plumbing license or an apprenticeship license, officials said."[78] Local 50 of the United Association of Plumbers, Steamfitters and Service Mechanics, whose national membership endorsed Obama, stated that Wurzelbacher has not yet completed the apprentice program he began in 2003.[79]
