Two out of three Britons have lied about reading books they have not, and George Orwell's "1984" tops the literary fib list, according to a survey published Thursday. ... According to the survey, 65 percent of people have pretended to have read books, and of those, 42 percent singled out "1984." Next on the list came "War and Peace" by Leo Tolstoy and in third place was James Joyce's "Ulysses."
The last book I read? 1984.. I swear to Gorak that's true.. and we all know I would not swear to my made up god unless I really meant it.
The reason I read it is that Douggie referenced it a while back, comparing Liberals to the "party" in the book. We all know that Doug is stupid as fuck, where up is down and black is white. True enough.. reading it, one can only be reminded of the destruction of civil liberties and the veritable dictatorship we lived under during the Bush administration.
The hall mark of the Republican party is single mindedness, and loyalty to the state. That is why the term "traitor" was so often applied to anyone who did not agree with the glorious war in Iraq.
Anyway.. the really funny thing about the whole thing.. was that George Orwell was actually a "Democratic Socialist".. and I laughed and laughed as Doug tried to paint him as some kind of Conservative "free market" hero... because, you know.. Doug is stupid as fuck.
The copyright on the book has longed since passed, and you can read it online. The chapter links are on the righ. It's not that long, but highly disturbing. I felt claustrophobic reading it.
I used to read a tremendous amount when I was in my early 20's. I hardly read books at all anymore. Online reading material as well as online games have erased whatever time I had to read. I do realize that's not such a good thing.
/update
Fixed the link to the book.
