Video of the Day

Posting this because we (and by "we", I mean John) bought some new shit for the home theatre.. new amp, blue-ray, etc., and I'll probably spend all day tomorrow getting it tuned and working correctly. But hey.. we're stimulating the economy or some shit.

I need one.. just one.. piece of shit fucking remote, instead of 30 of them.

/adding

We got a Play Station 3 for it's Blue-Ray playback capabilities.. I'm sort of reading the manual now to see how it needs to be configured.

When outputting audio via an HDMI cable, you must select [Linear PCM] under (Settings) > (Video Settings) > [BD / DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI)] to use this feature.
When outputting audio via an optical digital cable, you must do the following to use this feature:
- For BD playback: select [Linear PCM] under (Settings) > (Video Settings) > [BD Audio Output Format (Optical Digital)].
- For DVD playback: deselect [Dolby Digital 5.1 Ch.] under (Settings) > (Sound Settings) > [Audio Output Settings] > [Digital Out (Optical)].

You know.. if I was working on the design of the PS3, I'd look at that and say..

Hey.. can't the fucking piece of shit Japanese crap machine know whether it's plugged in to an HDMI cable or an optical cable and set this shit on it's own?

...

Seems kind of strange to me that only the Japanse make gaming consoles worth having. I blame Sam Tramiel for fucking up Atari, running it into the ground after it started out with market dominance.. and opening the door for the Japanese.

At this point, there's really no way to change the paradigm, and it's a billion dollar industry.

...

Well fuck.. I don't think the PS3 comes with a remote for the Blue-Ray player. If there's some multi-function remote, maybe it can be programmed?

Oh and Kor.. we ended up getting the Yamaha RX-V1800BL... which, I guess, is the latest version of the 1800.

Nice, I really like this amp and couldnt really ask much from it for the price.

Remote wise i'm not sure if theyres a multi function remote out there thats compatible (PS3 handles its remote through blue tooth).

That audio setup thing in the manual really does make it sound more complicated that it is lol. It will automatically pick up HDMI and run with the default HDMI audio out settings. However you can do in and run the "detect" mode and it will pick up what you amp can handle.

I have a Logitech Harmony 1000i to solve that bajillion remotes issue. You install it's host software on your pc and set up your key functions in a nice gui. Download to remote thru usb and take it back to the lounge room :)
Very good for the every day functions. Don't throw remotes away tho. Once in a while you need advanced menus etc that are outside what your macros can do.

Um... The problem you're gunna have is that the ps3 has no IR receiver. They are money grubbing fucks and will sell you their own sony remote device that AFAIK uses a wireless signal - as distinct from IR. No universal remote will solve that for you. Take it back and buy a single purpose BR player if the gaming is not a factor?

I saw a cheap PS3 remote that has an IR to bluetooth converter that you plug into the PS3.. and then just use that remote so the multi-function remote can learn the commands.. or some such shit. I'll have to do a bit of research.

The PS3 remote is here.

There some reviews with info on setting it up and such. Maybe I should get a Harmony and that remote, and I think I'll be set.

Actually.. what I'll do is just get that remote and see how I get on with multiple remotes before spending 300 bucks on the Harmony 1000.

lol. What happened to stimulating the economy?

Here's another thing I wonder about - why did the network feature in Yamaha amps only last one product line? I think it's one of the best ideas ever. Maybe I'm just a very niche market
But I do like being able to play internet radio right onto my main audio setup. I feel quite lucky to have got one.

Most people who are interested in playing internet radio normally have either a media centre PC or a media media centre extender hooked into their home theatre setup. I can play internet radio using my 360 through the windows media centre media extender. Its a nice feature to have but its not really necessary, and I assume not having it on there saves on production costs.

Americans have sat's overhead, and beam the radio directly into the small decoder that's plugged into the amp.

I think I read something about the Yamaha being XM ready.. so might not need that box.

Mmm sat radio. We're not that cool here :(
That said most of my net radio is from Europe.. so I don't know if sat radio would help even if available?

Kor: I think net radio, via media centre, via the 360 is a bit convoluted. But hey, if it works for you I guess.
The thing I hate about media centre is the absurd codec limitations.

Maybe I'm just bitter tho coz I built myself a media PC and finished it mere weeks before the 360 divX capability was implemented. With video and mp3 thru the 360 and web radio thru the amp... my media pc is in a wardrobe getting dusty.

I'd bust the media centre PC back out. 360 doesnt nativley handle many codecs, i acutally dont use it as my primary streamer anymore. I use a transcoder and the PS3 for all my vids. But all the transcoding in the world cant make up for a dedicated media PC.
