What seems odd to me in this whole "stimulus" process, is how Republicans are continually given the benefit of the doubt, regardless of the circumstances of the debate. As President Obama has pointed out.. the Republicans trashed our economy.. they took budget surpluses and turned them into record deficits.. they've created the biggest economic down turn since the Great Depression.
There was another 598,000 people laid off their jobs last month.
Why do the Republicans even get input on this issue? They've proven that Conservative economic policy is a horrendous killer of economies.
John McCain, on my teevee, just said "we are looking at spending as far as we can see for which we do not have revenue".
Oh really?
Where the fuck did the current massive deficit come from, Mr. Maverick? Why were you so awesomely in favor of creating it then, when we didn't need it, to opposing it now when we must have it?
It's funny.. they are completely backwards in every way.. Obama won in a landslide.. and Democrats control both houses.. and still the Republicans are allowed to control the message.
Of course, it's obvious, that the Republicans are only interested in political power, and they see that creating further economic horrors will be in their interest. They'll pin it on Obama, and try to make it a campaign issue for the next cycle.
Besides.. in this world.. there are winners, and there are losers. The natural consequence of winning is losing.. and if you create a fuck load more losers, those that have will have even more... and assholes like Doug Gibbs fixate on Nancy Pelosi mis-speaking during a speech. She said "five hundred million", instead of "five hundred thousand".
That's what's important to Doug.. not all the unemployed, soon to be desperate people. What matters to him is bagging on Pelosi for getting a word wrong.. This is because Doug is a complete idiot, and an evil partisan hack.
You can't be stupid rich without a lot of poor people. Economics is a zero sum game. If everyone else is in poverty, and you've got money.. you'll be golden.
That's the Republican plan.
It’s time for Mr. Obama to go on the offensive. Above all, he must not shy away from pointing out that those who stand in the way of his plan, in the name of a discredited economic philosophy, are putting the nation’s future at risk. The American economy is on the edge of catastrophe, and much of the Republican Party is trying to push it over that edge.
/update
Contessa Brewer (MSNBC) is on my teevee.. and she's talking to a professional woman in New York who lost her job. Her husband also lost his job. Brewer asked her what she thought the government should do to address this crises.
She said that the government should give money to the unemployed families instead of the banks. She wants cash.. directly from the government... not unemployment insurance benefits.. but an actual check with no strings that she can use for whatever she wants.
What confuses me is that so many people don't understand the difference between economic stimulus, and preventing our financial system from disintegrating.. versus pure Socialism.
This woman had a director level job with a health insurance company (ironic)... and she doesn't realize that if she can't pay the mortgage for her expensive home in New York, then she doesn't get to keep it. She should sell it and find cheaper accommodations. She should set her sights lower and accept a lower paying job.. or bag groceries.. whatever..
But what she wants.. is to maintain her standard of living and be given money from the government to make that happen, while not having any income of her own.
People are stupid.
