SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A fight over California's prison health care system escalated Wednesday as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger sought to throw out an $8 billion spending plan for inmate medical facilities, saying it's illegal and too costly.
Attorney General Jerry Brown and Schwarzenegger administration officials filed a motion in U.S. District Court in San Francisco asking a judge to stop plans for seven prison medical facilities.
They also called for the termination of a court-appointed receiver overseeing health care improvements at the state's 33 adult prisons.
"It's time to return the management of our prisons to the people who are authorized by the voters to do that," Brown said at a press conference. "What the receiver has become is a parallel government operating virtually in secret, not subject to government scrutiny."
Who on earth thought it would be a good idea to contract out prison services in the first place? They thought it would reduce costs? It simply creates an untenable situation because the contractor is solely motivated by profit. Their concern is not the health and safety of the inmate population.
The proper way to handle the situation is to realize that their sentencing guidelines and prisoner rehabilitation programs are in desperate need of fixing. If society wants long prison sentences for non-violent crimes, then you have to pay for everything that goes along with that. If they want to spend millions of tax payer dollars trying to execute prisoners, then they have to pay for it.
There is no choice.. so stop fucking whining about the cost when you're going about criminal justice the wrong way. You pay for it and shut the fuck up.
Grennwald has more about the American judicial system;
Homeless man gets 15 years for stealing $100
A homeless man robbed a Louisiana bank and took a $100 bill. After feeling remorseful, he surrendered to police the next day. The judge sentenced him to 15 years in prison.
It's a highly disturbing report... and most people don't care, because most people are not the homeless schmuck sent to prison for 15 years for a hundred dollar theft.
And juvenile justice?
PITTSBURGH – An 11-year-old Pennsylvania boy charged with killing his father's pregnant fiancee has left a county jail and is on his way to a juvenile facility.
Lawrence County Jail Warden Charles Adamo says sheriff's deputies took Jordan Brown at about 7:30 a.m. The boy is headed to the Allencrest Juvenile Detention Center, northwest of Pittsburgh.
A judge ruled it was in the boy's best interest to be in a juvenile center, though he remains charged as an adult.
What's the point of having a juvenile justice system if they are still going to charge kids as adults?
The reason they are trying this kid as an adult is because if he were tried as a juvenile, he would automatically become eligible for release when he's 18, and you definitely don't want that to happen with homicidal maniacs.
Doesn't it make more sense to change the law so that juveniles convicted of certain crimes NOT be automatically released at age 18? That way, you can define what crimes deserve a higher level of scrutiny due to concerns for public safety.
And just remember.. a 17 year old having sex with a 16 year old is A-Okay! An 18 year old having sex with a 17 year old is a felony.
And just a couple hundred years ago, it was very common for 14 year olds to get married. That was "traditional marriage".
