Merry Christmas

For me.. growing up.. it was a secular holiday of giving gifts, hanging out with family.. eating an awesome dinner that my mom made. It was a hell of a lot of fun..

What we were really doing, unbeknownst to us at the time, was honoring the very old Pagan winter festival. I like the idea of a great celebration for the sake of having fun, and enjoying friends and family.

John and I are not exchanging gifts this year. Neither of us wants to deal with the hassle, and neither of us can figure out what the other really wants, that doesn't cost 6 figures.. and we're not going there (*cough*Porsche*cough*).

We figured what might be better is just to pick up on little things that come up in the day to day routine that the other says might be nice.. and just get it.. not because of some holiday.. but just to do it. I have one idea already.

I do admit to having a fondness for Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol. I thought it had a great, secular, theme.. and I also liked a lot of the other traditional Christmas cartoons.. Rudolf.. Frosty.. etc.. just a magical time for a child.

I wonder if the kids today still get that magic, or if it's all about Nintendo?
