2 Down, 48 To Go

SAN FRANCISCO - The California Supreme Court has overturned a ban on gay marriage, paving the way for California to become the second state where gay and lesbian residents can marry.

The case involved a series of lawsuits seeking to overturn a voter-approved law that defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

With the ruling, California could become the second state after Massachusetts where gay and lesbian residents can marry.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is on record as having said that he would accept the court's ruling. He had previously vetoed state legislation legalizing same-sex marriage, so it looks like it's going to move forward and the largest state in the United States (one larger than most countries in the world) will have marriage equality.

The decision takes effect in 30 days. That means that same-sex couples can get married.. exactly the same as everyone else... in California. Just remarkable.

I know the loons are going to argue that "the voters approved the ban and the court is legislating from the bench". Again, I would point out at the time Loving vs. Virgina struck down anti-miscongeniation laws in over 17 states, more than 70% of the American public were opposed to inter-racial marriage. If it had been voted on, I don't know if inter-racial couples could get married today. I doubt it. So, that argument is bullshit. A Constitutional Republic is designed to protect the rights of the minority from the bigotry of the majority.

In contrast to earlier times, our state now recognizes that an individual’s capacity to establish a loving and long-term committed relationship with another person and responsibly to care for and raise children does not depend upon the individual’s sexual orientation, and, more generally, that an individual’s sexual orientation — like a person’s race or gender — does not constitute a legitimate basis upon which to deny or withhold legal rights. We therefore conclude that in view of the substance and significance of the fundamental constitutional right to form a family relationship, the California Constitution properly must be interpreted to guarantee this basic civil right to all Californians, whether gay or heterosexual, and to same-sex couples as well as to opposite-sex couples.
In contrast to earlier times... how remarkable! The court is saying that if you were an asshole before, maybe you didn't know any better and we sure as fuck know better now.

As I've said before.. you should be ashamed of yourselves for what you have done.. what you have invested yourself in.... but you won't. It's one thing to "believe" in God or Jesus.. it's quite another to use some silly dogma to validate your being an asshole.

And that's exactly what you are.

It won't be long before the federal government will be forced to recognize marriages in those states where it's legal.

Catching up with a comment from Jennifer, I'd imagine this will be the last word on it - for now anyway..

Conservative Chic said...
To YOU it is not rational, to other's it is perfectly rational. Just because you believe differently and put no credibility in the Bible does not make you right. In my eyes, you are the irrational one. But then again, that just shows our different opinions on religion. You also have a very different opinion on what a Conservative is. And considering that "Conservatives" even have differing opinions, you can't group us together, although you do that on a constant basis.
As Steve noted, using "rational" and "believe" at the same time is.. irrational.

I'm still hoping that Jennifer takes a big rock to a Red Lobster and beats somebody to death for eating a shrimp.

Truly, the Bible is chock full of really absurd prohibitions that mean nothing today. Here's a nice list for you, and I wish you would start killing people Jennifer, as your precious bible tells you to do. I could find many, many more whacked out bullshit in the bible.

It's obvious that Jennifer (and people like her) pick and choose the parts that they want to rely on for their "moral guidance". Never mind that it's the greatest human tragedy that she actually needs an old book, written by men, for her "morals". She simply has a heard mentality and goes with the broader loon philosophy, and thus, being gay is a "sin" and gay people should not be allowed to marry.

As for my so-called "grouping" together, I don't just pull that out of thin air. I reference some circumstance to substantiate my point. In this case, the "religious" conservative types are the most insane, so I like referencing that group. It's a hell of a lot harder classifying a Goldwater-Conservative.. but then, those don't exist anymore.

The marriage of "conservative" and "evangelical" is a bastard child of the most freaky bullshit ideology this country has ever seen. They are the most vile, violent, hating mother fuckers, and every time John McCain does another thing to distance himself from them, I just laugh and laugh.

Barack Obama is moving to the left, the liberals, the progressive, as opposed to running away. The country is coming around.
