Quote of the Day

"God didn't call America to engage in a senseless, unjust war. . . . And we are criminals in that war. We've committed more war crimes almost than any nation in the world, and I'm going to continue to say it. And we won't stop it because of our pride and our arrogance as a nation. But God has a way of even putting nations in their place...[God will say:] And if you don't stop your reckless course, I'll rise up and break the backbone of your power." - Martin Luther King, jr.
I'm curious if being "patriotic" means that you support every foriegn policy of the US government regardless of your own personal view.

I ask this in all honesty, and I'd be curious to know what "conservatives" think. I have asked this before..

There are some that insist that no matter what your view of whatever current war your nation launches, you are required to keep your mouth shut and your view private, because your vocal opposition somehow "harms the troops". It fails a reasonable logic test, but that's how most right wing freaks think.

Others think that when you believe your country is war mongering, your patriotic duty is to voice that and denounce war.

Which is it?

And what of King? Conservatives today would denounce MLK for his rhetoric, just as conservatives, like Doug, denounce Obama's former pastor.

Thing is.. stupid people don't understand context, and the tradition in which Wright speaks. It's not unlike MLK, and it's not wrong to criticize your own country when you believe they are wrong.

MLK said "And we won't stop it because of our pride and our arrogance as a nation".. and he was right. Here we are decades later, fulfilling his prophetic words.

I have no problem denouncing what I believe are America's flaws. I will praise what is great about America. I don't give a fuck what the conservative freaks think is supposed to be "patriotism" because they are nothing more than jack booted authoritarian freaks, slaves to the fathers of violence and destruction.

I don't agree with everything Wright has said. I don't think the government created AIDS to kill black people. I think some of his rhetoric is a bit "out there".. but this criticixm of Obama, and obsessive focus on Wright is just bizzare. I keep saying this over and over, but I don't understand this extreme fixation over a non-issue. There are far more important matters at hand.. the most important of which is, of course, what King talked about. Over a million Iraqi civilians are dead as a result of the war.

I wonder what King would say about that? God Damn America? I wouldn't be surprised....
