Orwell

I recall that Doug once referred to liberal policy as "Orwellian". Not surprisingly, Doug completely misunderstands Orwell's point.

This is one of those reasons why he will never debate me. Instead of just throwing out inane points with no substance as Doug constantly does, I'll refer you to George Orwell himself.

"The energy that actually shapes the world springs from emotions — racial pride, leader-worship, religious belief, love of war — which liberal intellectuals mechanically write off as anachronisms, and which they have usually destroyed so completely in themselves as to have lost all power of action ... He [H.G. Wells] was, and still is, quite incapable of understanding that nationalism, religious bigotry and feudal loyalty are far more powerful forces than what he himself would describe as sanity."
And this, of course, goes back to the authoritarian cult of the right wing. Glenn Greenwald is often far more verbose then I could ever dream of, and certainly more than Orwell in describing the type of person that ends up "conservative". Orwell says it all in one paragraph. He's saying that the American "conservative" movement is based on "emotion" and completely irrational.

Come to think of it, I recall one giant screed that Doug wrote that accused liberals of forming policy based on emotion. Doug - you might want to have a fucking clue before referencing George Orwell again. After all, Orwell questions your very sanity. I do as well.

When I mention Orwellian I didn't mean his personal beliefs, but the world he created for 1984.

I find the current administration treading a fine line with "Orwellian" ideology.

Take the hundreds+ year old concept of habeus corpus for example..
