The American Soldier

In a poll detailed today, of those who served in Iraq or have a close friend or relative who served in Iraq, just 38 percent approve of the President's handling of the war. That's just slightly higher than the public at large.

These findings are really nothing new. A New York Times poll in May showed that Iraq veterans and their families disapproved of how the war was being handled by two-thirds. A Zogby poll showed back in 2006, 72 percent of troops on the ground thought we should redeploy from Iraq within a year.
Why are the troops anti-American?

At least according to Doug's standard, they are traitors. Perhaps Doug thinks the troops are "demoralized" by public opinion back home, eh? Of course it couldn't be because of a failed policy, failed execution, failed leadership, failed ideology.

Nah.. couldn't be that.. If it was, Doug's head would simply explode. It has to be the liberals fault. Expect a new screed about it when he gets back.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Gibbs states the obvious;

What kind of role model would you like your child to look up to? Definitely not Michael Vick.

A good role model is someone with good morals. But what are good morals? In todays society the definition of morality has been clounded. To me, good morality is about being honest, doing the right thing, and not being selfish. In my opinion, the example of morals should be portrayed by the parent, not some over paid sport star.

I am Mrs. Pistachio, and that is my opinion.
I wonder, does anybody disagree with that? I think you could ask a hundred Americans of any flavor, and they wouldn't tell you that lying, doing the wrong thing, and being selfish, is a great way to live one's life.

One thing I find ironic, however, is the idea that sports stars are over paid. Doesn't Doug whine incessantly about "wealth redistribution"? Doesn't he compare it to having to give up an A in a class because somebody else got an F? Doesn't he favor lowering taxes on wealthy Americans, and mega-corporations?

So... why should an athlete that performs better than us mere mortals not capitalize on the capitalist system and be paid what he's worth? Is Mrs. Gibbs saying the team owner should reap more profits? Is she saying that ticket prices should be lower? If so, isn't that "price controls"? Does the government have an obligation to regulate the economics of sports? Isn't that a communist philosophy?

Why, exactly, is an NFL quarterback over paid? Doesn't his, and his teammates, performance attract an audience? Don't people pay market fees to watch the games live, and through networks, on tv? Where, exactly, should that money go?

Of course, I'm just going on and on about it to make a point. The conservatives can't even get their own story straight, and it's fun to point out the contradiction, hypocrisy, lying, and so-called "immorality" of a group that likes to tell everyone else how we're supposed to behave.

Stupid fuckers..

It would be interesting to know why these veterans/familys think the Iraq war policy is failed. A lot of people, like Doug, would claim it is because they arn't being allowed to do their jobs (read:sand into glass, taking the gloves off, 49th parallel). I do find simple yes/no polls to be somewhat less revealing as to the nature of the problem.

What you carelessly leave out is why they disagree with Bush's handling of the war. They believe, and I know this because I have many friends in Iraq, that the troops disagree because they believe that the rules of engagement are too restrictive and that Bush is catering too much to assholes like you rather than fighting the war. And lay off Mrs. Pistachio. She's been out of teaching for a dozen years or so and this blogging thing is new to her. It's amazing, Tom, that you basically go through life taking apart what everyone else writes, rather than having an independent thought of your own.
