Quote of the Day

To purchase a gun in the State of New York you have to give your full name, your date of birth, your residence, your occupation. You have to prove that you're a United States citizen, you have to show you are of good character, competency and integrity. And you have to demonstrate a real need for the weapon.

And thanks in part to our stricter gun control laws, crime is down dramatically in New York City. Shootings are down over 50 percent. Murder is down over 50 percent. But the fact is that 90 percent of the guns we take out of the hands of criminals in New York City come from out of the State of New York.

We need a federal law that bans all assault weapons, and if in fact you do need a handgun you should be subjected to at least the same restrictions -- and really stronger ones -- that exist for driving an automobile.

The United States Congress needs to pass uniform licensing for everyone carrying a gun. Congress must do more to prevent a tragedy like the one that happened at the Empire State Building from ever happening again. - Rudi Giuliani (1997)
Rudi reminds me a bit of Mitt Romney. Mitt has flip-flopped on virtually every issue he supported when he was governor of Massachusetts. He supported abortion, now he doesn't. He supported gay rights, now he doesn't.

Giuliani is, of course, quite correct that we need much stricter gun laws in this country. Upstanding citizens shouldn't be concerned since they will always be able to buy a gun for hunting or self-protection. It's just going to be interesting to see Giuliani flip-flop on this issue.

It must drive the loons absolutely insane that the leading Republican contenders hail from liberal states. They keep expecting Fred Thompson is going to enter the race, who they will embrace as their bat-shit crazy savior, but I'd wager that Thompson has some scary shit in his past that he doesn't want to the world to find out about, which is what would happen if he got put under a microscope. Hell, his wife is young enough to be his granddaughter or some shit.

Anybody know the crime rates in blue versus red states? Anybody want to wager if conservatives or liberals commit more crime?

Oh.. and why are conservatives obsessed with guns? It's exactly that same faux-machismo that Greenwald talks about and I referenced in 2 posts below this one. A conservative really needs a "magnum" to compensate for the tiny pecker in their drawers.
