I spent pretty much the entire weekend bitching and moaning. We went and saw some really god awful live music - the Cindy Lauper "True Colors" tour, that featured the Dresdon Dolls, Erasure, Lauper, plus really lame comedy from Margaret Cho, and Rosie O'Donnell. I expected it to be a huge pile of shit, and wasn't disappointed. John learned a lesson that it's best not to force me to go to something I know ahead of time is going to suck, because 99.9% of the time, I'm going to be correct. I have a much higher sense for entertainment suckitude then most people.
This is the box office receipts from this past weekend. Keep in mind, this is the "summer blockbusters".
1. "Evan Almighty," $32.1 million.
2. "1408," $20.175 million.
3. "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," $20.15 million.
4. "Ocean's Thirteen," $11.3 million.
5. "Knocked Up," $10.6 million.
6. "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," $7.2 million.
7. "Surf's Up," $6.7 million.
8. "Shrek the Third," $5.8 million.
9. "Nancy Drew," $4.5 million.
10. "A Mighty Heart," $4 million.
It's a veritable cornicopia of suckitude. I might watch a couple of them on DVD at some point. Notice a complete absence of science fiction and fantasy?
There's also a dearth of live music in town. We're going to see Rush in Phoenix next month, but beyond that, there's nothing worth seeing. Nine Inch Nails is doing a European/Asian tour, and who knows when they are going to tour the U.S. Music is stale and boring now, with the exception of just a couple of acts, and there's nothing worth paying to go see.
Video games suck. I think in the last 3 years, I've bought 3 games. I used to buy 3 games in a month.
Sports is teh suck as well. All there is to watch is baseball. I don't like AL ball, and I don't like the Rangers, and I'm not really all that interested in watching "stock" cars turn left.
Have my tastes changed? Am I just overly critical? Or, is it a sign that I should stop expecting to be entertained and do it myself?
I think most people are probably an "artist" in something, but never get around to finding out what it is. What if a person would have been a world class sculptor, but never actually tried sculpting anything, thus not finding out they had a talent for it? I've got time, and money.. now to find out what would be fun.

I haven't been to the theatre since Serenity and can't remember the last movie I watched at home. It's just all been so horrible lately :(
Unlike you though I can get into baseball, even AL ball. I'm a Mariner's fan as painful as it can be. :)
But even that can barely keep me 100% entertained most the time. So what's left to do but drink.
Gaming used to be great, when WoW was in full swing and raids were fun. LoTRO fills some of the void, but I'm having trouble really getting into it. I'll sit down for an hour or two now and again, but can't seem to stomach a full on 6-8 hour session like I used to do with WoW.
I installed Sim City 4 again last night... It took all of 3 hours before I remembered why I uninstalled it in the first place. Basically the game's buggy and will crash once your city gets too big. And well, without an autosave option, you lose a good chunk of progress. :(
Anyway, with the big move and everything, hopefully i'll find new entertainment in DC and maybe I'll have more free time than I'm used to and get back into WoW or some other game... who knows.
Steve.
