Hating America

The New Yorker has an extremely detailed story on Army Major General Antonio M. Taguba's investigation of torture in the American military. If you're interested in more than just slogans (that means you, right wing loons), give it a read. It's facinating.

The right wingers would claim that General Taguba just "hates America". The loons would claim that those of us that are horrified by the moral lapses in our military are America haters.

In fact, the right wing loons think we need to be doing more torture. We need more prisons in Eastern European countries. We should just summarily execute all the detainees at Gitmo, right? In other words, in the mind of the right wing loons, the rule of law doesn't mean shit because the "terraists" behave worse. Then, and this is the priceless part, idiots like Douglas V. Gibbs claim that the left is "Orwellian". I shit you not. It's as if he has a total inability to even understand what 1984 was about. It boggles the mind how that's possible.

So, I ask again. Which ideology truly "hates America"? Is it the left, horrified at the moral collapse and violations of the law at the hands of or military - or is it the right wingers that cheer it on?

It's a pretty simple question.

“From the moment a soldier enlists, we inculcate loyalty, duty, honor, integrity, and selfless service,” Taguba said. “And yet when we get to the senior-officer level we forget those values. I know that my peers in the Army will be mad at me for speaking out, but the fact is that we violated the laws of land warfare in Abu Ghraib. We violated the tenets of the Geneva Convention. We violated our own principles and we violated the core of our military values. The stress of combat is not an excuse, and I believe, even today, that those civilian and military leaders responsible should be held accountable.”
Why does General Taguba hate America?
