There will be a lot of discussion about the tragedy that happened at Virgina Tech today. People will want to talk about the politics of gun control, the stresses that young people are under, the security at schools, the "state of society", and so on and so forth. Maybe some of those discussions are valid, but I find it odd that they are being debated this soon.
It seems to me that day to day life is fragile. The best times of our lives are those that are lived between the tragedies and personal misfortunes that inevitably come. I don't see how it's possible to avoid those circumstances, even though we can consciously try to minimize them.
But, in the here and now, where we think we're in our "best times" (and most of us are all the time), it's important to appreciate them. A normal and uneventful day is truly something to treasure.
Unfortunately, it takes a bad situation to remind us of that sometimes.
