Cinema

So I wonder what's happened to the movie business, and entertainment in general. It's crap.

I was just looking at my netflix rental history.. let's have a look.. and my rating is out of 5.

Idiocracy 2
Children of Men 3
Babel 2
Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny 2
Flyboys 3
The Prestige 4
Man of the Year 2
The Departed 3
Miami Vice 3
A Scanner Darkly 3
Little Miss Sunshine 4
Capote 4
The Descent 3
Jet Li's Fearless 3
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby 3
Dark Water 2
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest 3
Clerks 2 3
Resident Evil: Apocalypse 3
Mission: Impossible III 3
An American Haunting 2
X-Men 3: The Last Stand 3
Thank You for Smoking 3
The Longest Yard 3
Constantine 3
Silent Hill 3
The Skeleton Key 3
Brothers 3
Sahara 2
V for Vendetta 4
Saw 2 3
King Arthur 3
Green Street Hooligans 3
When I rank something a 3, based on a 5 point system that would imply that it's better than average. Unfortunately, Netflix doesn't allow a 2.5 rating, so if I give a film a 3 if it's just average.. I didn't dislike it but it wasn't very good. A 4 is a good movie, and a 5 is obviously a very good movie.

So if we look at the last 33 movies I've watched, only 4 of them were "good" movies, or at least better than just average.

Looking now, I gave Miami Vice (a crappy and boring movie) a better rating than Babel, which was nominated for a "best picture" Oscar. Babel was a boring piece of shit movie also.

Seriously.. what the fuck?

We watched the season premiere of The Sopranos last night. It was the same boring shit as the entire previous season. I'd imagine it'll get better I guess. We also started watching a new show called The Tudors, which is basically a drama centered around King Henry VIII.

This is what he looked like;

This is how he looks on the Showtime version;

As you can imagine, the show is about hot young people fucking each other, and various intrigues and violence. It treats this dramatic period in the English monarchy like "300" treats ancient Sparta. In other words, they expect their audience is masturbating while watching it.

I hear the new Quentin Tarantino movie, Grindhouse, is very good but bombed at the box office this past weekend. Perhaps the current state of entertainment is reflective of the taste of average Americans (which we all know I have a great deal of disdain for), and basically makes the point of Idiocracy.

The movies I currently have in my Netflix queue are worse then the ones I've referenced above. I've been trying to keep the "better" movies towards the top, but I've already seen them by now. It just gets worse from here.

Grindhouse looks retarded. A chick with a gun on her stump...wtf? I just have such distaste for Tarantino that, when combined with that image, I start hemorhaging (sp?).

The Kill Bill movies were great, and I liked Pulp Fiction also.

Pulp fiction was good, and the first Kill Bill was okay, but he's just been riding the success of Pulp Fiction for a long time now. I mean...what has he done that has been so worthy of the groupies since then? Half the movies you hear with his name he wasn't involved in at all, he just heres about them and then puts his name on them.

Anyway /end rant. I think Hollywood needs a really good epic movie.

BTW: New HBO Series Song of Fire and Ice looks SWEET!
