Song of the Day
There are about 6 billion people on this planet. Lets face it, every one of us are unknown people living out our lives in total anonymity. In the grand scheme of things, we leave behind nothing but some DNA to be mixed over however long this species exists.. unless you leave behind no DNA - which is my case. Everything about me is destined to be erased.
The Song of the Day is the title track from the new James Bond movie. Here it is, You Know My Name.
It's composed and performed by Chris Cornell. He's what I call a "gene pool lottery winner", or GPLW for short. He has extraordinary song writing skills, extraordinary voice, and extraordinary looks. That's what it takes to rise above the 6 billion other people on this planet. If he just had the looks, or the voice, or the song writing skill, nobody would know who he is. It takes all of that and a subtle ability to fit the mood of the world at the point in which he lives his life.
Then you see the man in the photo, Daniel Craig. I've seen a number of his movies before the new Bond movie. He's like Chris Cornell in that he has extraordinary acting ability, extraordinary looks, and is simply a magnetic and charismatic man. In the pool of the 6 billion people, he is one of those that we know, and I wonder if he even realizes that.
Look at the picture. Go ahead, scroll up and look at him again. There are countless people who look amazing like that. There are countless people who spend all day in a gym. Look again at the picture. Look at his face and his expression. Look at the position of his legs, and his arms. Look at how they are spaced away from his body, and the way he wears the watch. Watch his movies prior to the new Bond movie. You'll see what I'm talking about. With 6 billion people on the planet, it's not possible to be the new Bond and not have every element mastered in an extraordinary way.
This is what Chris Cornell looked like before he cut his hair;
See what I'm getting at?
And for some of us, we retreat into our heads and see little glimpses of something different than the mainstream that touches in the world of not-anonymity. It can be maddening to realize that we fell short in not only the main talent area, but in all the others that are required. We'd have no idea who Daniel Craig is if he couldn't act with the skill he does. We would never have heard a Chris Cornell song if he didn't look the way he does.
When you watch the new Bond movie, look at the opening credits when the music plays. The graphics and artistic vision behind it are wonderful. Somebody put all of themself into it. Very few people know who the person is that designed all of that. They have mastered an artistic vision on a scale unimaginable to ordinary people - and we will never know who that person is. They only mastered one discipline, and didn't combine it with the proper genetics, and proper style.
Personally, I'm close enough to a few of the traits to understand what they are, but far enough to know it's not me. That's worse then never having a clue.
Look again at the pictures. Play the song again. Life is not about 15 minutes of fame, and I don't know what it means to be anything like Daniel Craig or Chris Cornell, but I sometimes just wonder.

I dont know that neccisarily being good looking is required for being more than a footnote in history.
Janis Joplin for instance. Maybe just looking different is required, but I dont know if it really is in a medium that requires only ears.
/shrug. I have almost no idea what 1/2 the people who I listen to look like, and I am very attuned to what music I listen to. Music makes or breaks a movie for me.
For instance, take Howard Shore. I havn't watched any of the LotR moveis in months, but I still listen to the soundtracks on a regular basis. He isn't great looking, and he doesn't really have an extrodinary charisma, he just write extremely moving and beautiful music. I think doing something singular in an extrodinary fashion is, perhaps, enough to make somone a GPLW.
I think the way a lot of people try to make themselves GPLWs is to be infamous.
Only uber nerds know who Howard Shore is.. that's the point.
But what about Janis Joplin?
I suppose you could chalk it up to the "Austin Powers" phenomenon. You didn't have to look good to be cool in the 60s.
I'm sad that you put George Lucas on that list...
How about somebody from '06?
Jerry Seinfeld?
Robin Williams?
Borat/Ali G
There is an interesting trend...most of the ones I can think of are all comedians. I'm having a hard time thinking of a big-name, mainstream, non-comedian actor or actress.
Well, there you go..
