I'm still annoyed by Heroes. The writing is god awful. You know how bad the writing is by how often I pause the video and bitch about how ludicrous the plot is. I'll normally give bad writing a pass if there's a really cute actor in the show - but there's not, so it better not suck. I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to stick with it. It's a shame really. If they maybe had hired the writers from the X-Files it would have been better.
Okay.. example (and don't forget I'm a show behind).. the cop has ESP and hears thoughts.. rescues a girl.. and it appears suspicious to another cop, who responds by.... arresting him. There's no real evidence at all, just a slight little bit of suspicion.. so they arrest him. I paused the tv, looked at John and said "well, that's really fucking silly. A real cop would never have done that". That's an example of shit writing.
Not to mention that the show is moving forward at a snails pace. At least 75% of the show is non-interesting fluff at this point. In other words, they've got another episode or 2 before it's banned from the PVR.
On the other hand, there's a new show on Showtime called Dexter that I really liked. The first show, they explained the premise and got right into it, and by the end of the show a human head had flown through the air and crashed into the windshield of a car - so you know it's good.
The show stars one of the actors from Six Feet Under (which was a really good show by the way). He plays a crime scene investigator but is himself a serial killer. He narrates the episode so it's cool to have that peak into the mind of a killer, at least as far as the writers know how to do that. So far, it's well written.
Lets see.. what else.. E.R. - I really don't like John Stamos, and the writing for his character is horrible and trite. The season premiere he was a paramedic who directly contradicted the attending physicians order. By the third show, he's now an intern - and his first major case he directly contradicts an attending's order.
In the medical community, you get fired for that. They simply do not put up with that sort of bullshit, but the bigger tragedy is that the "rebel" character is so over done in the show. Whenever a writer resorts to stupid shit like that, you know they have no real idea how to flesh out an interesting character.
Then there's Stamos. There's handsome guys you'd want to hang out with, and handsome guys you just want to punch because of the way they look. Stamos is in the latter group.. kind of like a Leonardo DiCaprio type. I mean.. just the name alone makes me want to punch him.. but then you get a look at him. God...
Oh.. and by the way.. if you never watched Six Feet Under, get a copy of the final show on DVD and watch that. It won't matter that you haven't seen the rest of the shows. It's one of the best finales ever in TV.

I am normally very picky in the shows that I end up watching. I've given Heroes a few weeks now and I'm still not sure. I've noticed the crappy writing and at times terrible acting, but there is still something about it that intrigues me.
I really like the japanese guy, and after the last night he's even better. There are still a few twists in the plot that I'm enjoying, but it's going to take a lot in the long run to keep me watching. For now though I think I can sacrifice an hour a week to it, we'll see how it plays out though.
I could see this show working well as a mini series pumping out 10 episodes or so and calling it good. I just don't see it being one of those 7 year super shows.
Steve.
