Hollywood Sucks Part Deux

So.. hoping in vain to find something worth seeing this weekend, I was looking at the batch of newest reviews at msnbc. This is the short descriptions

No Oscars this time for ‘All the King’s Men’
• ‘Jet Li’s Fearless’ is no ‘Hero’
• ‘Flyboys’ is a throwback to another era
• ‘Jackass: Number Two’ will please diehard fans
• ‘Science of Sleep’ is a tepid dream
• ‘Black Dahlia’ is a stylish jumble
• ‘The Last Kiss’ just isn’t satisfying
• ‘Gridiron Gang’ plays a predictable game
• ‘Haven’ doesn’t have a coherent story to tell
• ‘U.S. vs. John Lennon’ offers nothing new
The only movie which didn't get a negative review was Jackass 2.. which is saying an awful lot about Hollywood lately...

So.. how about I write a screenplay? I'm good at copying styles and techniques (it's how I learned to code), so I could go find some good screenplays on the net to figure out how they are put together. I just need a story.. something imaginative and not clichéd. Something with a deep moral meaning and point..

I've obviously got plenty of time..

I'd go see it. Can't be worse than the crap already out there. :)

I was a big fan of LA Confidential, and the Black Dahlia is written by the same guy, so I'm planning on seeing that one. Other than that, nothing looks to great for me either.

Hey, if I come up with an idea and you write the screenplay for it, do I get some of the royalties? =)

No.. you don't get any royalties.. all mine mine mine.. I'll fly you in for the premiere though..

I might actually do this.. if I can find a screen play from an award winning film just to see the structure and the style.. then essentially copy it with my own plot, characters, and dialog.. that might actually work.

Hmm.. what genre.. I'd probably be best in a sci-fi type deal.. maybe add in some elements of horror or drama.. with political twists..

People like movies where the main characters have unusual "powers" that the readers would like to have themselves.. that's why the Harry Potter and Star Wars type shit works well.. I will think on it and do some searches..

It would be exceptionally amusing to start one of those internet phenomenons type deals around a screen play to get the attention of a big studio to buy it and make a film..

You know.. like the korean kid playing the guitar ending up with 7 million views and a story on CNN.. but unfortuantely I'm not a 20 year old asian kid that doesn't speak engrish..

Actually...I think one could make a pretty sweet movie about that. Give it a try!

It's already been done.... Red Planet I believe, else it was Mission to Mars.. they both came out about the same time, one of them had this crazy bit about the face.

Okay.. well, not set on Mars then.. I agree, that's trite and over-done..

I hate cliched space movies anyway.. both Red Planet and Mission to Mars were just crap..

I'll think on it..

I found a source for info on the mechanics of it..

http://www.pubinfo.vcu.edu/artweb/playwriting/film.html

Seems rather daunting.. this is gonna sound strange.. but I've thought of doing this trick for writing a novel. Basically, it's just copying the mechanics of a novel or a screen play and substituting the location, plot, dialog, characters, etc..

It would be like constructing a new building using the plans for an existing building, but just changing the facade.. and details like the color, the size of the windows, etc. The building would look completely different, but the engineering behind it would be essentially the same. Nobody would notice, but it would be vastly easier to construct.

Example;

AARON
What are you talking about?

GRADY
(walks on with Jack)
The American way. Pleasant dreams,
Mr. Root.

EXT. OKLAHOMA-TEXAS HIGHWAY MORNING

Sunrise, this one all pink and gold.

The black Chrysler pulling the black trailer, rolling on
Highway 33, passing the sign: Welcome to Texas!

Aaron following in his orange and white rig, passing
a gas station.

INT. GAS STATION DAY

A kid looking out the plate glass toward the highway.
He's about 17, in a well-used station shirt.

KID
(running toward the
bays)
You see that? We gotta go!

Take that and simply rewrite it to fit the new story..

I think I might be able to do that.. hmmmm Is that plagarism?

BTW: Fearless was actually really good. And I have heard Gridiron Gang was good.

Again, you know the genre, and if you arnt into it, you arnt gonna like em. /shrug
