"Bruce Fein, a Republican legal activist, who voted for Bush in both Presidential elections, and who served as associate deputy attorney general in the Reagan Justice Department, said that Addington and other Presidential legal advisers had 'staked out powers that are a universe beyond any other Administration. This President has made claims that are really quite alarming. He's said that there are no restraints on his ability, as he sees it, to collect intelligence, to open mail, to commit torture, and to use electronic surveillance. If you used the President's reasoning, you could shut down Congress for leaking too much. His war powers allow him to declare anyone an illegal combatant. All the world's a battlefield -- according to this view, he could kill someone in Lafayette Park if he wants! It's got the sense of Louis XIV: 'I am the State.' "Thank god for term limits!
I'm always interested in the way people rationalize things in their own minds. For instance, have a political discussion with somebody in regard to these issues raised about Bush, and they may say "Well, it's better than the Democrats". When you ask, specifically what their issue is with the current Democratic leadership, they cannot articulate it. Then it's easy to twist them into a knot, until they start blurting out the ever useful "I don't have to explain it, that's what I think". Clearly a hallmark of the religious, right? Exactly. That's why I often assert that Bush is the Republican god, because it's all about faith.
Hmm... term limits. If there ever was a time when I thought somebody might try and pull off a real coup in the United States, this would be it. Seriously, if there is a major "terrorist" attack in the United States shortly before the next election, I suggest heading for either Canada or Mexico in a huge hurry because all hell will break loose.
Then again, I'm the angry liar and none of this is true..
Oh.. and isn't it interesting that the President can declare war? I thought that violated the Constitution, but there is no doubt that Bush simply started the Iraq war, which is quickly approaching the duration of the entire World War II campaign.
