So... I have a Netflix membership, and I sent back a couple of movies and was looking at my queue to see what I want next. It's all crap. I mean seriously.. wtf is going on with Hollywood? Did they already make all the good movies and now there's nothing else worth making? I'd rather watch a new Ask a Ninja video than most of these multi-million dollar films.
Good god.. look at my queue;
Brothers R Foreign
The Matador R Comedy
A History of Violence R Thrillers
The Terminal PG-13 Drama
Open Water R Thrillers
Resident Evil: Apocalypse R Horror
Hotel Rwanda PG-13 Drama
Kinsey R Drama
Hitch PG-13 Romance
Constantine R Action & Adventure
Sahara PG-13 Action & Adventure
The Longest Yard PG-13 Comedy
The Skeleton Key PG-13 Thrillers
March of the Penguins G Documentary
Bad News Bears PG-13 Comedy
Dark Water UR Horror
Four Brothers R Drama
Red Eye PG-13 Thrillers
Flightplan PG-13 Thrillers
Saw 2 R Horror
Most of it is crap. Seriously.. I have a number of them in the queue just to have something in there.
I did watch Kung Fu Hustle over the weekend, and thought it was really good. I also watched Syriana, which left me thinking; so what's your point?
Syriana is one of those movies where it's like they film things going on in the world, and show it to you. There's no attempt to be entertaining. They don't attempt to create interesting characters. Even a documentary has a point to it. I guess if you had to yank a point out of Syriana, it's that big oil companies do shady business deals, the middle east is volatile, and being a CIA agent can be dangerous.
Because the movie really had no point, the critics loved it. In a way, it reminds me of Crash (which I also thought was rather flat). Crash showed you a few days in the lives of a number of people in L.A., without filtering it through a writers imagination. It's not a movie, it's not a documentary, it's like a really expensive and slick personal video.
I watch movies to be entertained, or shocked, or horrified, or amused, or educated, or whatever kind of reaction you want to get from a movie, beyond just saying "and?"
Netflix has this thing where you can rate the movies, and I've rated 772 so far. I've probably seen a few hundred more that I haven't rated. Based on the movies I've rated, here is what Netflix is suggesting that I'd like;
Pearl Harbor
Robot Chicken: Season 1 (2-Disc Series)
Singin' in the Rain
Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story
Yojimbo
The Bible Collection: Joseph
The Bible Collection: Abraham
The Gospel of John (3-Disc Series)
Longtime Companion
The Bible Collection: Moses
The Bible Collection: David
The Bible Collection: Jacob
Seriously, what the fuck is deal?
