Bit of good news

Sully linked this poll.

"The public is divided ... on whether the federal government should be involved in promoting moral values, with 48% saying it should and 48% saying it should not. In 1996, Americans took a very different view on this matter, with 60% saying the government should be involved and 38% saying it should not... That change appears to be a fairly recent phenomenon." From 1993 until recently, majorities of at least 10 percentage points chose "Government should promote traditional values" over "should not favor any values."
Sullivan seems to think it's backlash against the bat-shit crazy people. I think I agree with that.

Cultural evolution happens at too slow a pace, but it does happen. Society becomes more liberal, and it will spread around the world. Maybe one day, Muslim women will be able to show their heads and walk next to men, and not behind. Heck, they might even be able to get a drivers license in Saudi Arabia.

And in the United States, we might not allow the crazy people to decide what is "moral" anymore. After all, what did we get with our born-again Christian, rapture ready Preznit? Torture and war. I think my idea of moral is a hell of a lot more moral.

But of course, what would Andrew Sullivan be if he didn't simply make some shit up to counter-balance the on-the-money observation of Christians? He's gotta go on Chris Mathews show and pull this gem out of his ass;

Summary: Despite the fact that most Americans favor the Democratic position of setting dates for the withdrawal of U.S.troops from Iraq and disapproving of the war altogether, Newsweek and Andrew Sullivan continued to present the Republican Party's "stay the course" platform for the Iraq war as a political winner.
Sully's a total bottom so it doesn't suprise me that he likes taking it from those oh-so-butch neocons as well..
